Art and the Enlightenment: What Inquiring Minds Want to Know

Sunday, August 7

This fascinating illustrated lecture will investigate how eighteenth-century art reflected the revolutionary changes taking place in science, technology, governmental institutions, literature, and philosophy. Presented by Twyla Kitts—the teacher-program coordinator for the VMFA education and statewide partnership department and the collection educator for the museum’s Byzantine, Renaissance, Baroque, and eighteenth- and nineteenth-century European galleries—the program will begin with a discussion of works ranging from those by Jean–Antoine Watteau at the start of the century to those by Francisco Goya near its end.

Before or after the lecture, visit Goya, Dali, Warhol: Masterpieces of World Art from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts on view in the MSV Changing Exhibition Gallery. This program has been organized by the VMFA Office of Statewide Partnerships and is funded, in part, by the Jean Stafford Camp Memorial Fund. Please arrive early; lecture seating is limited and tickets will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Admission:
Free to MSV Members; all others: $8, $6 senior/youth (includes gallery admission)
