This year’s Members’ Lecture event will celebrate the Glen Burnie Historic House preservation project. Exclusively for MSV Members, this event will feature a presentation about the role of preservation and conservation in historic structures by engineer and architect Michael Henry, P.E., A.I.A., of Watson & Henry Associates, New Jersey. As chief engineer and architect for the Glen Burnie Historic House preservation effort, Michael will also discuss specifics of the Glen Burnie structure. Sessions explore the wonders of the natural world through observation and hands-on activities.

Why do we have seasons? Why is it cold in winter? And why did we get so much snow last winter? We’ll measure temperature,
humidity, and wind, we’ll make weather instruments to take home, and we’ll compare weather in meadows, below evergreen trees, and
under the snow pack.

Grades 1-2 attend from 9-11:30 a.m.
Grades 3-5 attend from 12:30-3 p.m.

Tap into your family history at this FREE event! Presented by the MSV and the Shenandoah Valley Genealogical Society (SVGS), the day will include four presentations from research experts and a display of tables hosted by genealogical and historical societies and research organizations. In the day’s lectures, collector Chris Ferguson will discuss how to use military ephemera to learn about your ancestor; professional genealogist and proprietor of Virginia Ancestry Victor Dunn, CG, will explain how to conduct research using Confederate civilian records; Certified Genealogist Barbara Vines-Little will talk about researching women who lived during the Civil War; and Connie Potter, archivist from the National Archives in Washington, DC, will share her expertise and discuss researching Civil War ancestors with Union connections.

A schedule of lecture times and a listing of research organizations scheduled to attend the event will be posted on the MSV website by early December. Please arrive early as lecture seating is limited.

Admission:
Heritage Day activities are free. Regular admission rates apply for gallery tours. Snow date: Saturday, January 28, 2012.

You may not worry about mosquitoes in winter, but that doesn’t mean our insects have disappeared. Learn how insects survive
winter. Search for insects under leaf litter, in the cracks of tree bark, and in pond water and mud. We will make beetle models and
learn how to collect and mount insects.

Chase away the winter blues with special gallery tours and Dixieland jazz! On this special night at the MSV, new tours of the Shenandoah Valley Gallery’s Decorative Arts Rooms will be offered at 6, 7, and 8 p.m. Before or after the gallery tours, enjoy Dixieland jazz from the band Dixie Rhythm in the Reception Hall. The band will perform 45-minute sets at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. The Museum Café will be open from 5 to 9 p.m. serving dinner, tea, and desserts, and wine will be sold in the Museum lobby, too. Just for this special Galleries at Night, MSV Members can bring a friend for FREE!
