Course Description

The Winchester Disc Golf Course was designed by a group of volunteers passionate about the sport of disc golf.  The course is designed to challenge all levels of play and was funded by volunteers and local businesses and organizations.

The course meanders through 170 acres of park land and boasts a balance of long challenging holes and short strategic holes.  Each hole consists of two concrete tee boxes; a white novice/beginner tee box and a blue advanced/professional tee box.  For your convenience, tee boxes are clearly marked with full-color hole maps and permanent colored squares in the concrete.  Scorecards are also available at the course map which is located at the outdoor pool parking lot or you can download the scorecard here.

Leagues and Tournaments

The Grand Opening Disc Golf Tournament is scheduled for Sunday, July 11, 2010.  Registration is from 8:30 a.m. – 9:15 a.m.at the Jaycee Shelter in Jim Barnett Park.  A brief course dedication will take place at 9:00 a.m. and the tournament will begin promptly at 9:30 a.m.  Beginner through advanced players are encouraged to participate.  $25/player and proceeds from the tournament will go towards the construction of the back 9 holes of the course.

The Shenandoah Germanic Heritage Museum, which encompasses a 392 acre homestead, historic buildings, and a variety of artifacts such as household implements, furniture, tools, documents, and other items related to the history of the property and the people who lived there from the early 1740s until 1984, collects, preserves, and displays artifacts related to the Valley’s Germanic people.  We are dedicated to public understanding of the Germanic Heritage of the Great Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. We -

• maintain and exhibit our original Germanic homestead
• collect, demonstrate, and document artifacts of everyday life
• collect and share stories of the Germanic lifestyle
• continue to expand our genealogical data of Germanic settlers in the Shenandoah Valley

Three items that will appeal to a wide audience are

• The front 200 acres of our property are a part of the core battlefield area (Gen. George Armstrong Custer among others were there) of the Battle of Toms Brook, September 19^th, 1864 (get detailed information at http://www.hottelkeller.org/battle_of_toms_brook.php)
• The Hottel and Keller families are maternal ancestors of world famous local singer Patsy Cline
• More than half of all the Germanic surnames in the Shenandoah Valley (Pitman, Funkhouser, Snarr, Zirkle, Borden, Crabill, Sheetz, etc.) can trace some of their ancestral roots to the Hottel and Keller families.

GermanFest will feature

• Non-stop live entertainment and educational speakers including an authentic German band
• Children’s activities
• Re-enactors from Revolutionary, Civil and/or French and Indian Wars
• Arts and Crafts Vendors with period craft demonstrations
• Authentic German Food
• Beer and Wine Garden

One hundred fifty of the cleverest dogs in North America will compete in the annual Sheepdog Superbowl, the most challenging display of canine cunning and athleticism in North America. Historic Belle Grove Plantation hosts the event and ticket prices include admission to the mansion house and many other doggy demonstrations.

Nursery (young) sheepdogs compete September 18th and 19th and open qualifications will be throughout the following week. The top forty dogs will compete in a semi-finals on Saturday September 25th and the very best of the best will compete Sunday, the 26th to determine the Sheepdog national Champion.

It’s a brilliant, beautiful, gentle sport which is child and mannerly dog friendly.

Begun in the early 1770s, Shepherdstown is now a vibrant, old town community on the Potomac River. The National Register of Historic Places has most of Shepherdstown listed as a Histroic District.

Harpers Ferry is at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers, as well as the states of Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia. Visiting this quaint, historic community is like stepping into the past. Robert Harper he opened a ferry across the Potomac in 1761. The town was a hotspot for the Civil War because of the US Armory and Arsenal.
